Autoimmune Disease & Rheumatology
The immune system is the body's protective mechanism against disease-causing organisms. However, in autoimmune diseases, a dysfunctional immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own organs, tissues, and cells. These conditions affect approximately 20% of the world’s population and include diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.
One emerging area of research highlights the role of “leaky gut syndrome” as a potential underlying cause of autoimmune diseases. Leaky gut occurs when the intestinal lining becomes permeable, allowing toxins, undigested food particles, and microbes to enter the bloodstream. This can trigger an immune response, leading to chronic inflammation and the development of autoimmune conditions.
At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness, we treat autoimmune conditions using a combination of medications and holistic strategies. Since the human gut houses 60% of the immune system, addressing gut health, particularly leaky gut, is a critical component of managing autoimmune diseases. By improving gut integrity through natural supplements, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications, we can often see significant improvements in autoimmune symptoms.
Our Treatment Approach:
- Diet and Lifestyle: We emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle as foundational approaches to managing autoimmune diseases. This includes personalized dietary plans focused on reducing gut permeability, stress management techniques, and physical activity recommendations designed to support immune health and overall wellness.
- Leaky Gut-Specific Supplements:
- L-Glutamine: This amino acid is essential for repairing the gut lining and reducing intestinal permeability, making it a cornerstone supplement in the treatment of leaky gut syndrome.
- Zinc Carnosine: A combination of zinc and carnosine that supports the healing of the gut lining and helps reduce intestinal permeability.
- Collagen Peptides: These help strengthen the gut lining and support overall digestive health, crucial for those with leaky gut syndrome.
- Colostrum: Rich in antibodies and growth factors, colostrum supports the immune system and promotes the healing of the gut lining.
- Probiotics and Prebiotics: Probiotics like “Lactobacillus rhamnosus” GG and prebiotics such as inulin support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which is essential for maintaining a healthy gut barrier.
- Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera can help reduce inflammation in the gut and promote the healing of the gut lining.
- Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root: These herbal supplements create a protective barrier over the gut lining, helping to soothe and heal leaky gut.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil, omega-3s help reduce gut inflammation and support overall digestive health.
- Turmeric, Ginger, and Garlic: These anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich spices support gut health by reducing inflammation, promoting digestion, and providing antimicrobial benefits.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Helps improve digestion by increasing stomach acid production, aiding in nutrient absorption and gut health.
- Coconut Oil: Contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) with antimicrobial properties, helping to reduce harmful bacteria in the gut and support a healthy microbiome.
- Medications: Our customized medication therapies include anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and other targeted drug therapies such as hyaluronic acid injections and corticosteroids. These are prescribed based on individual patient needs to effectively manage inflammation and other symptoms.

Autoimmune Conditions in Dallas: Common Questions
Joint pain, prolonged fatigue, rashes and unexplained inflammation deserve proper evaluation. Dr. Rajan Kohli is board-certified in Family Medicine and evaluates these symptoms, orders and interprets the relevant testing, and co-manages your care alongside a rheumatologist where one is needed.
What symptoms should be evaluated?
Joint pain and swelling lasting more than six weeks, prolonged morning stiffness, unexplained fatigue, recurrent low-grade fevers, hair loss, dry eyes and mouth, rashes that worsen in sunlight, and Raynaud's colour changes in the fingers. Any of these persisting deserves evaluation rather than waiting.
Does a positive ANA mean I have lupus?
No, and this is one of the most common sources of unnecessary alarm. A positive ANA is found in many healthy people, more often in women and with increasing age. It is meaningful only alongside symptoms, examination findings and more specific antibody testing. A positive result on its own is not a diagnosis.
Will you refer me to a rheumatologist?
When the evaluation points to a condition needing specialist management, yes — and we handle the referral rather than leaving you to arrange it. Dr. Kohli continues to manage your general medical care, monitor medication effects, and keep the whole picture coordinated.
Can you manage my medications between specialist visits?
Yes. Many of these medications require regular blood count, liver and kidney monitoring, and attention to infection risk and vaccination timing. That monitoring fits naturally into primary care and saves you separate trips.
Is this covered by insurance?
Evaluation and laboratory testing are covered as ordinary medical care when medically necessary. Our staff verifies your benefits before your appointment.
