Sports Physical
Most children and adolescents are required to have a sports physical before they can participate in a school sports season. At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness, we understand the importance of these evaluations in ensuring the safety and well-being of young athletes.
During a sports physical, we conduct a thorough assessment to ensure your child is fit to participate in their chosen sport. We pay special attention to:
- Cardiovascular Health: We carefully listen for heart murmurs or other abnormal cardiological findings that could indicate underlying issues. This is a critical step in preventing potential heart-related incidents during physical activity.
- Respiratory Health: We also screen for asthma or exercise-induced asthma, which can affect athletic performance and safety. If there are any concerns, we can provide management strategies or appropriate referrals to specialists.
In addition to these key areas, we review your child’s overall health, including musculoskeletal assessment, to ensure they are physically ready for sports participation. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive evaluation that supports your child’s athletic endeavors while prioritizing their health and safety.
If any concerns are identified, we will discuss them with you and, if necessary, make appropriate referrals to specialists for further evaluation or treatment.
Schedule your child’s sports physical with us today to ensure they are ready for the upcoming sports season, and to give you peace of mind that their health is in good hands.
Exercise and Physical Function in Dallas: Common Questions
Whether you are starting from nothing, returning after an injury, or trying to keep strength as you age, exercise is medical territory. Dr. Rajan Kohli evaluates your cardiovascular and joint status and gives you a starting point that is safe for your situation.
Do I need clearance before starting exercise?
Most healthy adults can begin moderate activity without any testing. Evaluation first is sensible if you have known heart disease, chest pain or breathlessness on exertion, fainting, poorly controlled blood pressure or diabetes, or if you are older and planning to start something vigorous.
I have joint pain — should I still exercise?
Usually yes, with the right kind. For osteoarthritis, appropriate activity reduces pain and improves function; rest tends to make it worse over time. Low-impact options such as cycling, swimming and resistance work are often better tolerated. Dr. Kohli will evaluate the joint first if the pain is new or severe.
Why does strength training matter as I get older?
Muscle mass declines steadily from midlife, and with it strength, balance and metabolic health. Resistance training is the most effective countermeasure, and it also supports bone density — which matters a great deal for fracture risk in older adults, particularly postmenopausal women.
What about supplements and performance products?
Most offer little, some interact with prescription medications, and the category is not reviewed by the FDA for effectiveness before sale. Products marketed for performance or muscle gain have been found to contain undeclared ingredients. Bring what you are considering and it will be reviewed honestly.
Is an exercise evaluation covered by insurance?
Evaluation of symptoms and medically necessary cardiac testing are covered. Personal training and fitness services are not medical benefits. Our staff verifies your coverage beforehand.
