PRP Therapy

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy uses a concentrate from your own blood to support healing in joints, soft tissue and skin. At Lakewood Primary Care in North Dallas, Dr. Kohli evaluates whether PRP is appropriate for your goals during a consultation. Results vary by individual; PRP is typically not covered by insurance.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Rajan Kohli, MD — board-certified Family Medicine.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment that has been widely used in orthopedics to support the natural healing process in joints, soft tissues, tendons, and ligaments. In recent years, PRP has also gained recognition in dermatology for its potential to enhance skin rejuvenation and support hair growth.

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP therapy involves taking a small sample of your blood, which is then processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These platelets are rich in bioactive proteins and growth factors, often referred to as "liquid gold," due to their role in supporting tissue repair and regeneration.

Applications of PRP Therapy

  • Skin Rejuvenation: PRP can be applied to the skin, particularly after treatments like microneedling or laser procedures, to enhance the skin's appearance by promoting a more youthful and revitalized look.
  • Hair Restoration: PRP has been shown in dermatology studies to support hair follicle activity, which can help in the treatment of hair thinning or hair loss. The concentrated platelets are injected into the scalp to support hair growth.
  • Joint and Tendon Health: PRP therapy can also be injected into joints and tendons to support the body’s natural healing processes, offering an additional option for patients seeking relief from certain orthopedic conditions.

PRP Therapy in Dallas: Common Questions

Platelet-rich plasma uses a concentrate prepared from a small sample of your own blood. Dr. Rajan Kohli performs PRP procedures himself at our Walnut Hill Lane office, following an evaluation to determine whether you are a suitable candidate.

What is PRP and how is it prepared?

A small volume of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelet fraction. That concentrate is then injected or applied at the treatment site. Because it is prepared from your own blood at the time of the procedure, there is no donor material involved.

What is the evidence behind it?

Evidence varies considerably by indication and is stronger for some uses than others. Dr. Kohli will tell you honestly what the evidence supports for your specific situation, what it does not, and what a realistic expectation looks like. Results differ between individuals and no outcome is guaranteed.

Does it hurt, and what is recovery like?

Local anesthetic is used. Most patients describe pressure and soreness at the site for a few days. Specific activity restrictions depend on the area treated and are explained before you book, not after.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the indication and your response. Dr. Kohli will give you an expected range at your consultation and reassess as you go rather than committing you to a package up front.

Is PRP covered by insurance?

Generally not — most plans consider PRP investigational for most indications, so it is usually self-pay. You will be given the full cost before you decide.
