Well Woman Exam

Early diagnosis and proactive care can prevent illness and save lives. Our Well Woman Examination program is designed with this principle in mind, offering regular, periodic screenings to catch diseases early and complementing our comprehensive health services for women.

Women have unique healthcare needs, and it’s essential that they undergo regular well-woman exams and health screenings. Our goal is to encourage women to take advantage of these health services, support them in identifying preventive strategies, and improve their overall health. We offer preventive service recommendations for women at every stage of life, from adolescence through maturity.

Our Well Woman Exam Services Include

  1. Comprehensive Physical and Psychosocial Assessment: We assess both the physical and mental well-being of our patients, ensuring a holistic approach to their health.
  2. Counseling and Adolescent Guidance: We provide tailored advice and support for younger women, helping them navigate their unique health needs.
  3. Pre-Pregnancy Care: For women planning to conceive, we offer pre-pregnancy consultations to optimize health before pregnancy.
  4. Risk Factor Identification and Prevention: We identify potential health risks and implement prevention strategies to mitigate them.
  5. Breast Cancer Screening: Our well-woman exam includes breast cancer screenings, such as screening mammograms, which are crucial for early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
  6. Cervical Cancer Screening: We follow the latest guidelines for cervical cancer screening to ensure early detection and prevention:-
  • Women aged 21-29: Pap smear every 3 years.
  • Women aged 30-65: Pap smear every 3 years, or co-testing with HPV testing every 5 years.
  • Women over 65: Screening may be discontinued if they have had adequate prior screening and are not at high risk for cervical cancer.
  1. Post-Hysterectomy: Screening is generally not necessary if the hysterectomy was for non-cancerous reasons and there’s no history of high-grade precancerous lesions or cervical cancer.

The frequency of well-woman visits is tailored to each individual, based on age, health status, and risk factors. However, it is generally recommended that women receive at least one well-woman exam per year from adolescence and continuing across their lifespan to maintain optimal health.

At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness, we are committed to supporting women’s health through every stage of life. Schedule your well-woman exam today to take charge of your health.

Well Woman Exams: Common Questions

A well woman exam is a yearly preventive visit covering screening, contraception and menopause questions, breast and pelvic examination, and a Pap smear when one is due. Dr. Kohli performs well woman exams at Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness in Dallas. Most commercial plans cover an annual preventive visit at no cost to you.

What is included in a well woman exam?

A well woman visit typically includes a review of your medical and family history, blood pressure and weight, a breast examination, a pelvic examination when indicated, a Pap smear if one is due, and a discussion of contraception, periods, menopause symptoms, mood and bone health. Screening labs and mammogram or bone density referrals are ordered when appropriate for your age and risk.

How often do I need a Pap smear?

For most women aged 21 to 29, a Pap smear every three years. From 30 to 65, either a Pap every three years, HPV testing every five years, or Pap plus HPV co-testing every five years. If you have had an abnormal result, a weakened immune system, or certain other history, you may be screened more often. Dr. Kohli will tell you which interval applies to you.

Is a well woman exam the same as an annual physical?

They overlap but are not identical. A well woman exam focuses on reproductive and breast health, contraception and menopause. An annual physical is broader — heart, lungs, metabolic screening, vaccines. Many patients have both addressed in one visit; whether your plan covers them together depends on your insurance, and we check before the appointment.

Do I still need well woman visits after menopause?

Yes. After menopause the focus shifts rather than stops — bone density and fracture risk, cardiovascular risk, continued cervical and breast cancer screening on the appropriate interval, urinary and vaginal symptoms, and management of menopause symptoms. Cervical screening can often stop after 65 with an adequate history of normal results.

Can I discuss menopause symptoms at this visit?

Yes, and it is a good place to raise them. Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, vaginal dryness and low libido are all appropriate to bring up. Dr. Kohli can evaluate your symptoms, order relevant testing, and discuss treatment options and their risks and benefits for your individual history.

Is the exam covered by insurance?

Most commercial plans cover one preventive well woman visit per year at no cost to you under preventive care benefits. Medicare covers a Pap smear and pelvic exam on a set schedule. If a problem is evaluated during the same visit, that portion may be billed separately — our staff verifies your benefits beforehand so there are no surprises.
