Natural supplement/Botanicals and Pharmaceutical medications
Natural supplements if used correctly can be used in addition to traditional medicine or as a replacement to it. It can also be used for anti-aging and prevention of disease. The key here is it has to be personalized to the patient and dosed in the right quantity.
We use hand selected natural supplements from reputable vendors as adjunct therapy for many diseases as well as preventative strategies.
Supplements and Medications in Dallas: Common Questions
Most patients take something alongside their prescriptions — a vitamin, a botanical, something recommended by a friend. Dr. Rajan Kohli reviews all of it together, because the interactions between them are where the risk actually sits.
Are supplements regulated the same way as prescription drugs?
No, and this is the most important thing to understand. Dietary supplements are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. Manufacturers are responsible for their own products, and independent testing has repeatedly found products containing more, less, or something different from what the label states.
Which interactions should I actually worry about?
Several are well documented: St John's wort reduces the effectiveness of many drugs including contraceptives and some antidepressants; vitamin K affects warfarin; fish oil, ginkgo and vitamin E affect bleeding risk; potassium supplements interact with certain blood pressure drugs. This is why one physician should see the entire list.
Should I bring my supplements to my appointment?
Yes — the actual bottles, not a remembered list. Labels tell us the dose and the other ingredients, which is often where the interaction lies. Nobody will lecture you; the aim is a complete picture.
Do you sell supplements here?
Where a supplement is genuinely indicated — a documented deficiency, or a specific medical reason — Dr. Kohli will tell you what to take and at what dose. Recommendations are based on your test results, not on a product line.
What should I stop before surgery?
Several supplements affect bleeding and anesthesia and are commonly stopped one to two weeks beforehand. Do not guess — bring your list to your pre-operative visit and you will get specific instructions on what to hold and when.
