Chronic Opioid Dependency

Suboxone

Suboxone is the prescription medication to treat opioid dependence. It consists of two medications — buprenorphine and naloxone —that work together to control cravings for opioids and reduce withdrawal symptoms. The goal of the therapy is to eventually get the patient off opioids and Suboxone and help them have the coping skills to prevent relapse.

Opioid Dependence Treatment in Dallas: Common Questions

Opioid use disorder is a treatable medical condition, and medication treatment is the most effective approach there is. Dr. Rajan Kohli is board-certified in Family Medicine and treats opioid dependence in the primary care setting, confidentially and without judgment.

What is medication treatment for opioid use disorder?

Buprenorphine, often combined with naloxone, is prescribed to reduce cravings and withdrawal and to support recovery. It is the best-evidenced treatment available and substantially reduces the risk of overdose death. It can be prescribed in an office setting rather than requiring a specialist clinic.

Is this just swapping one drug for another?

No, though it is a common misconception worth addressing directly. Buprenorphine taken as prescribed stabilises brain chemistry, allowing normal function — working, driving, family life — without the cycle of intoxication and withdrawal. Treating this condition with medication is medicine, in the same way insulin is for diabetes.

How long will I need treatment?

There is no fixed answer, and longer treatment is associated with better outcomes. Many patients remain on medication for years, and some indefinitely. Stopping too early carries significant risk of return to use and overdose. Duration is reviewed with you as you go.

What if I am taking opioids prescribed for pain?

Physical dependence from prescribed long-term opioid therapy is not the same as opioid use disorder, though the two can overlap. Dr. Kohli will evaluate your situation, discuss whether tapering is appropriate and how to do it safely, and address pain management. Never stop prescribed opioids abruptly on your own.

Is treatment confidential, and is it covered?

Yes to both. Substance use treatment records carry additional federal privacy protections beyond standard HIPAA. Most commercial plans and Medicare cover this treatment; our staff verifies your benefits before your appointment.
