Gut Health Optimization

An unhealthy gut is often responsible for causing a variety of digestive and gastrointestinal issues, including fatigue, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, arthritis, and even depression. Since the gut microbiota plays a major role in immune health, addressing issues in the gut often helps to resolve the underlying cause of these symptoms.

Improving your gut health is the first and most crucial step towards optimizing your overall health. At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness, we guide you in understanding your gut health and enhancing your immune function. Our approach is systematic, beginning with an analysis of your dietary patterns followed by a gut microbiome test.

Gut Microbiome Testing:

We utilize advanced testing from “Genova Diagnostics” to evaluate your gut health. The test involves collecting a small stool sample, which is then analyzed to provide insights into the balance of your gut microbiota and any potential imbalances or issues.

Personalized Gut Health Protocol:

  • Dietary Recommendations:

  1. Low FODMAP Diet: For those with IBS or similar conditions, we may recommend a low FODMAP diet to reduce symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea.
  2. Anti-Inflammatory Diet: A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, berries, and nuts to help reduce gut inflammation.
  3. High-Fiber Diet: Increasing the intake of dietary fiber from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes to support healthy digestion and promote beneficial gut bacteria.
  4. Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD): For patients with conditions like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, we may recommend the SCD to help reduce symptoms and promote gut healing.
  • Supplemental Support:

  1. Probiotics: Specific strains like “Lactobacillus rhamnosus” GG, “Bifidobacterium” species, and “Saccharomyces boulardii” to help restore and maintain a healthy gut microbiota.
  2. Prebiotics: Supplements such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and resistant starches that feed beneficial gut bacteria.
  3. Digestive Enzymes: To aid in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, especially for those with conditions like lactose intolerance or pancreatic insufficiency.
  4. L-Glutamine: An amino acid that supports the repair of the gut lining, particularly beneficial for those with leaky gut syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease.
  5. Zinc Carnosine: This combination of zinc and carnosine is known to help repair the gut lining and reduce intestinal permeability, making it a strong option for those with leaky gut syndrome.
  6. Collagen Peptides: These help to strengthen the gut lining and support overall digestive health, particularly in cases of leaky gut.
  7. Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera can help reduce inflammation in the gut and promote healing of the gut lining.
  8. Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root: These herbal supplements form a protective barrier over the gut lining, helping to soothe and heal leaky gut.
  9. Colostrum: Rich in antibodies and growth factors, colostrum supports the immune system and promotes healing of the gut lining.
  10. Apple Cider Vinegar: Helps improve digestion by increasing stomach acid production, which can aid in nutrient absorption and gut health.
  11. Coconut Oil: Contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that have antimicrobial properties, which can help reduce harmful bacteria in the gut and support a healthy microbiome.
  12. Turmeric, Ginger, and Garlic: These anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich spices support gut health by reducing inflammation, promoting digestion, and providing antimicrobial benefits.
  13. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil supplements, omega-3s help to reduce gut inflammation and support overall digestive health.
  14. Vitamin D: Adequate levels of vitamin D are crucial for maintaining gut health and immune function, particularly for those with deficiencies.
  • Lifestyle Modifications:

  1. Stress Management: Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises to reduce stress, which can have a significant impact on gut health.
  2. Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps to promote healthy digestion and can positively influence gut microbiota composition.
  3. Adequate Sleep: Ensuring quality sleep is essential for overall health, including gut health, as poor sleep can disrupt gut microbiota balance.

At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness, we offer a range of tests to evaluate the overall health of your gut and assist you in achieving your optimal health and wellness goals. Our comprehensive approach ensures that your gut health is not just managed but truly optimized.

Digestive Health in Dallas: Common Questions

Bloating, irregularity, reflux and abdominal discomfort are common and worth evaluating properly. Dr. Rajan Kohli is board-certified in Family Medicine and evaluates digestive symptoms, arranges the right testing, and refers to gastroenterology when a procedure is needed.

When should digestive symptoms be evaluated?

Promptly if you have any warning sign: blood in the stool or black stools, unintentional weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, anemia, a family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, or new symptoms after age 45. Otherwise, symptoms lasting more than a few weeks or affecting daily life deserve a look.

What testing might I need?

It depends on the pattern. Commonly a blood count, coeliac screening, thyroid function, inflammatory markers and stool testing where infection or inflammation is suspected. Imaging or referral for endoscopy or colonoscopy follows if the history or testing points that way.

Do I need a food sensitivity test?

IgG food sensitivity panels sold direct to consumers are not a validated way to diagnose food intolerance, and major allergy organisations advise against using them for that purpose. A structured elimination and reintroduction, done properly with guidance, gives far more reliable information — and coeliac disease should be excluded before removing gluten.

Are probiotics worth taking?

Evidence supports specific strains for specific situations, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. It does not support a general daily probiotic for everyone, and products vary widely in what they actually contain. Dr. Kohli will tell you whether one is reasonable for your situation.

Is this covered by insurance?

Evaluation and medically necessary testing are covered as ordinary medical care. Our staff verifies your benefits beforehand.
