Lifestyle with Diet exercise and sleep management
Everything in our environment interacts with our genes to create health or disease. This is the revolutionary concept of epigenetics. Our diets, nutritional status, air, water, how much we exercise, trauma, psychosocial factors, and
exposure to environmental toxins and radiation can all influence our genes and our health. Creating a healthy environment inside and out is our first step to balancing the system
Lifestyle Medicine in Dallas: Common Questions
Diet, activity and sleep affect nearly every number we measure — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight and mood. Dr. Rajan Kohli treats these as part of medical care, with specific, measurable targets rather than general advice to eat better.
How much exercise actually makes a difference?
Current guidance is 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous, plus muscle strengthening on two days. Meaningful benefit starts well below that — going from nothing to something is the largest single step. Strength work matters more with age than most people expect, for bone density, balance and metabolic health.
Which diet should I follow?
The one you will actually maintain. Mediterranean and DASH patterns have the strongest evidence for cardiovascular and blood pressure outcomes, but adherence predicts results more than the specific pattern. Dr. Kohli works from what you currently eat rather than handing you a plan you will abandon.
Why does sleep matter medically?
Short or poor-quality sleep worsens blood pressure, blood sugar control, appetite regulation, mood and immune function. Most adults need seven to nine hours. If you sleep enough and still wake unrefreshed, sleep apnea should be evaluated — it is common, frequently undiagnosed, and treatable.
Can lifestyle change replace my medication?
Sometimes, and it is a reasonable goal to work toward with monitoring. Blood pressure and blood sugar medications can often be reduced when weight, diet and activity improve. Never stop a prescribed medication on your own — do it with Dr. Kohli, with numbers checked as you go.
Is this covered by insurance?
These discussions are part of covered medical visits. Some plans additionally cover nutrition counselling; our staff can check yours.
