Functional & Integrative Medicine in North Dallas

Functional and integrative medicine looks for the underlying and contributing factors behind a symptom, rather than treating the symptom alone. At Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness in North Dallas, this care is provided by Dr. Rajan Kohli, MD, a board-certified family physician who is fellowship-trained in functional, integrative and regenerative medicine. Because he is also your primary care physician, functional testing and conventional treatment happen in one place — and most visits are billable to insurance or Medicare. Call or text 214-810-4331.

What is functional medicine, and how is it different?

Conventional care is excellent at diagnosing and treating disease. Functional and integrative medicine adds a wider look at the medical, behavioral, nutritional and environmental factors that contribute to how you feel — and combines conventional treatment with that broader evaluation. Done inside a primary care practice, it stays grounded and coordinated rather than becoming a separate, cash-only silo.

Is functional medicine covered by insurance?

In most cases, yes. Because this care is delivered by your primary care physician, your visits and medically necessary testing are generally billable to insurance or Medicare, the same as any other primary care visit. Certain supplements or specialized tests may be out of pocket; we are transparent about that before you decide.

What conditions functional medicine helps with

Common reasons patients seek this care include fatigue, gut and digestive problems, hormone and thyroid symptoms, weight and metabolic concerns, and autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. We evaluate, diagnose and treat these, and coordinate with the rest of your care.

What testing we run

Testing is guided by your history and may include metabolic panels, thyroid and hormone studies, inflammatory markers and, where indicated, gut and nutritional testing. We explain what each test means and build your plan from the results.

Peptides — where they fit

Peptides are a topic of growing interest. Some are FDA-approved medications with specific, established uses — for example GLP-1 medications used in medical weight loss and diabetes. Others are compounded and are not FDA-approved; those are considered only on an individualized, physician-supervised basis after evaluation, and we do not make treatment claims about them. If you are curious whether peptide therapy is appropriate for you, we will give you a straight, evidence-based answer at a visit.

Your first visit, step by step

Your first functional medicine visit is a longer, whole-picture appointment: a full history, an examination, and lab orders. You leave with a plan — conventional treatment where indicated, plus nutrition, lifestyle and supplement guidance — and a follow-up schedule to track progress.

Functional medicine and your regular primary care

This is not a replacement for your primary care — it is your primary care, done more thoroughly. Everything stays in one chart, which means fewer gaps, no conflicting plans, and one physician who knows your whole picture.

Is this the same as holistic or alternative medicine?

No. Functional and integrative medicine here is physician-led and evidence-informed. We use conventional diagnosis and treatment as the foundation and add nutrition, lifestyle and other tools where the evidence supports them — we do not ask you to abandon proven medical care.
