Skin problems we handle in primary care
A great deal of everyday skin care belongs in primary care, where it can be handled at the same visit as the rest of your health. Common concerns we evaluate and treat include acne, rashes, eczema and dermatitis, bacterial and fungal skin infections, rosacea, warts, and bothersome skin tags and cysts. When a prescription is the right answer — for example a topical or oral treatment for acne — we can start it and follow your response.
Skin checks and skin-cancer screening
If a spot is new, changing, or does not heal, it deserves a look. We perform skin examinations and teach the ABCDE warning signs for moles — Asymmetry, irregular Borders, uneven Color, Diameter over about 6 mm, and Evolving over time. When a lesion needs tissue sampling, we can perform a skin biopsy in the office and arrange the right follow-up. The American Academy of Dermatology explains how to check your own skin between visits.
When primary care treats it — and when you need a dermatologist
| Primary care handles | Refer to dermatology |
|---|---|
| Acne, rashes, eczema, dermatitis | Severe or treatment-resistant disease |
| Skin infections, warts, rosacea | Confirmed or high-risk skin cancer |
| Skin exams, ABCDE mole checks, biopsy | Complex or widespread chronic conditions |
Medical skin care vs. cosmetic skin care
This page is about medical skin care — diagnosing and treating problems and screening for skin cancer. Concerns that are cosmetic rather than medical, such as fine lines, sun damage, pigment and texture, are handled through our aesthetic services: aesthetics, laser treatment and anti-ageing. A visit makes the distinction clear and points you to the right one.
Does insurance cover a skin visit?
Yes. Medical skin visits — for a rash, an infection, acne, a suspicious mole or a skin check — are covered medical care under Medicare and most commercial plans. Purely cosmetic treatments are generally not covered. Insurance participation can change — call or text 214-810-4331 to confirm your specific plan before your visit.
