Emotional Well-Being in Dallas: Common Questions
Emotional well-being is part of medical care, not separate from it. Dr. Rajan Kohli addresses sleep, stress, mood and coping as part of your overall health, and connects you with therapy or psychiatric care when that is the right step.
Does mindfulness actually have evidence behind it?
Structured programs such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy have reasonable evidence for anxiety, depressive symptoms and chronic pain. The evidence is for structured, taught programs rather than for apps used occasionally, and effect sizes are modest — useful alongside other treatment, not a replacement for it.
How do I know whether I need therapy?
A reasonable threshold: symptoms lasting more than a couple of weeks, affecting work, relationships or daily function, or that you find yourself managing with alcohol or avoidance. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit. Dr. Kohli can help you decide and make the referral.
Can sleep problems cause emotional symptoms?
Very often, and the relationship runs both ways. Untreated sleep apnea and chronic insomnia both worsen mood and anxiety significantly, and both are treatable. If you snore, wake unrefreshed, or your partner has noticed you stop breathing, that is worth evaluating.
What about alcohol?
Alcohol is a depressant and worsens both sleep and anxiety, often while appearing to help in the short term. If you are drinking more than you would like, say so — it is a common and treatable thing to raise, and you will not be judged for it here.
Is this covered by insurance?
Visits are covered as ordinary medical care. Coverage for therapy depends on your behavioral health benefits, which our staff can help you check.
