Gut-health-and-detoxification
Optimal gut health has become a prominent focus in 21st century health. Your gut microbiome is a vast community of trillions of bacteria and fungi that live in your gastrointestinal tract, and have a major influence on your metabolism, body weight, propensity to illness, immune system, appetite and mood. Links between chronic illness and an imbalanced microbiome keep growing. Our gut is at the core of our health. Understanding why it breaks down and how to repair it becomes of the utmost importance.
Detoxification is the science of how our bodies get rid of waste. If waste builds up, we get sick. The key becomes figuring out how to enhance our body’s capacity to detoxify and get rid of waste while minimizing our exposure to toxins.
Digestive Health and Elimination in Dallas: Common Questions
Your liver and kidneys are the organs that clear waste from your body, and they do it continuously. Dr. Rajan Kohli evaluates how well they are working with straightforward testing, and treats the conditions that impair them — rather than selling a cleanse.
Do detox programs and cleanses work?
No credible evidence supports commercial detox programs, cleanses, foot baths or colonic irrigation for removing toxins, and some carry real risks including dehydration, electrolyte disturbance and bowel injury. Your liver and kidneys already do this work. The useful question is whether they are working properly, which is measurable.
How do you assess liver and kidney function?
With standard blood and urine testing — liver enzymes, bilirubin and albumin; creatinine and estimated GFR; and urine protein. Where results are abnormal, further testing looks for causes such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis, medication effects, alcohol or diabetes. These are treatable conditions and finding them early matters.
What actually helps my liver?
Reducing or stopping alcohol, treating fatty liver through weight management and blood sugar control, reviewing medications and supplements that stress the liver, vaccination against hepatitis A and B where appropriate, and treating hepatitis C if present — that last one is curable in most cases with modern treatment.
Can supplements damage my liver?
Yes. Herbal and dietary supplements are a recognised cause of drug-induced liver injury, and because they are not reviewed by the FDA for safety before sale, contents can vary from the label. Bring everything you take, including anything bought online, so it can be reviewed.
Is testing covered by insurance?
Yes, liver and kidney function testing is routinely covered as medically necessary care. Our staff verifies your benefits before your appointment.
