Hormone and Mood Evaluation in Dallas: Common Questions

Fatigue, low mood, poor sleep, brain fog and irritability have many possible medical causes. Dr. Rajan Kohli is board-certified in Family Medicine and evaluates these symptoms properly — history, examination and targeted laboratory testing — before attributing them to any single cause.

Can a lab test tell me if my neurotransmitters are off?

Not reliably. Blood, urine and saliva tests marketed as measuring neurotransmitter levels do not reflect brain neurotransmitter activity, and we do not base treatment on them. What we do test is the things that genuinely cause these symptoms and are treatable — thyroid function, blood count, vitamin B12 and D, blood glucose, kidney and liver function, and hormone levels where indicated.

What actually causes these symptoms?

Most often something identifiable: thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, depression or anxiety, perimenopause or low testosterone, diabetes, chronic stress, alcohol, or a side effect of a medication you already take. Several can be present at once, which is why evaluation looks at the whole picture rather than one hypothesis.

How is treatment decided?

By what the evaluation finds. That may mean treating a thyroid problem, correcting a deficiency, addressing sleep apnea, adjusting or stopping a medication, hormone treatment where clearly indicated, or referral for therapy or psychiatric care. The plan follows the diagnosis.

Is this covered by insurance?

The evaluation visit and medically necessary laboratory testing are generally covered by Medicare and commercial plans. Our staff verifies your benefits before your appointment.

How long before I feel better?

It depends entirely on the cause and how long it has been present, and cannot be promised in advance. What Dr. Kohli commits to is measuring objectively, reviewing at set intervals, and changing the plan when something is not working.
