For years, one of the hardest conversations in our Dallas primary care office has been about the cost of GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Patients on Medicare who could clearly benefit from drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound were often priced out, paying many hundreds of dollars a month or going without. As of July 1, 2026, that has changed. Medicare has launched a new program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, and for eligible beneficiaries it brings the cost of certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications down to $50 for a one-month supply.
Here is what the program covers, who qualifies, and how our team at Lakewood Primary Care and Wellness can help you find out whether it is a fit.
What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal program, effective July 1, 2026, that helps Medicare beneficiaries pay for certain GLP-1 medicines used for weight management. Under the program, your cost for a covered drug is $50 per month regardless of your income level.
A few important details to understand up front: the $50 payment does not count toward your Medicare drug plan deductible or your yearly out-of-pocket limit, and these drugs are not eligible for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. In other words, it is a flat, predictable $50 per monthly fill for as long as you remain eligible and on the same medication.
Which medications are covered?
The program covers three specific GLP-1 products for weight management:
Foundayo (tablet)
Wegovy (injection or tablet)
Zepbound KwikPen — the KwikPen only. The single-dose Zepbound pen and Zepbound vials are not covered under this program.
If you are already getting a GLP-1 medication that your Medicare drug plan pays for, you should keep getting it through your plan — the Bridge program is designed for people who are not already receiving a covered GLP-1 through their plan.
Am I eligible for the $50 GLP-1 Bridge?
To receive these medications through the program, you must meet all four of the following requirements:
1. You have Medicare Part D drug coverage — either a standalone Medicare drug plan or a Medicare health plan that includes drug coverage. Certain special plan types (some private fee-for-service plans, cost plans, or PACE organizations) do not qualify. If you are unsure what type of plan you have, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
2. You are not already eligible to receive a GLP-1 drug through your Medicare drug plan. If your plan already covers a GLP-1 for you, you continue through your plan rather than the Bridge.
3. You do not have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease. If you have one of these conditions, your Medicare drug plan may already cover a GLP-1 medication for you — so the first step is to check with your plan.
4. You are at least 18 years old and meet one of these weight-and-health criteria:
• A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher, or
• A BMI of 30 or higher and certain types of heart failure, high blood pressure that is hard to control, or chronic kidney disease (stage 3a or above), or
• A BMI of 27 or higher and prediabetes, or a history of heart attack, stroke, or blocked arteries in your legs or arms.
BMI is a number calculated from your height and weight. If you are not sure what yours is, that is one of the simplest things we can check for you at a visit.
How do you actually get the medication?
The process is straightforward, and much of it runs through your doctor’s office:
First, you and your physician discuss whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you and whether you meet the program’s requirements. If a covered drug is a good fit, your doctor sends the prescription to the pharmacy. The pharmacy may contact you to confirm your Medicare ID number so it can process the prescription. After the pharmacy confirms your eligibility, your doctor submits a form to Medicare to obtain approval for coverage, and you will receive a letter from Medicare confirming that your medicine is covered. From there, you pick up your medication at the pharmacy and pay $50 for a one-month supply. For refills, you do not need a new approval as long as you stay on the same drug — even if your dose changes.
